Divine Judgment and Political Missteps: How Obaseki Led the PDP to Defeat

every misstep by Governor Obaseki was a manifestation of God's

divine judgment, culminating in their loss and the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo and the APC.

By Comrade Michael Abu.

When God sets His hands against a people or leadership, they often begin to make fatal mistakes that lead to their downfall. In the case of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the PDP, the very foundation of their governance was riddled with missteps and miscalculations that led to their inevitable loss in Edo State. From the onset, Obaseki's decision to wage war against revered traditional institutions, particularly the palace of the Oba of Benin, signaled the beginning of his undoing. In a land where the monarchy is deeply respected, Obaseki’s antagonism toward the Oba alienated him from the very people he sought to lead, creating deep-rooted resentment that resonated across the state.

As Obaseki’s administration progressed, his relationship with his deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, deteriorated. What should have been a united front of leadership quickly unraveled into a bitter feud. The public squabble between the governor and his deputy showcased a government divided against itself, unable to stand. This internal discord sent a strong message to the electorate: if the governor could not manage his own cabinet, how could he be trusted to manage the affairs of the state?

Further compounding the PDP’s downfall was Obaseki’s abandonment of the legacy PDP, a faction that had originally welcomed him after his fallout with the APC. Instead of integrating with the core PDP members, he sidelined them, treating them as outsiders in their own party. This resulted in internal divisions that weakened the PDP’s structure, making it nearly impossible for them to present a cohesive front during the election. It became evident that the governor’s approach was not one of unity but of self-interest and division.

On top of these political blunders, Obaseki’s poor performance in governance was the final nail in the coffin for the PDP. His administration’s inability to deliver on promises, particularly in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, disillusioned the people of Edo State. The much-touted MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding) produced no tangible results, leaving the state's development stagnant and its citizens frustrated.

In the end, it was not just Obaseki’s mistakes, but a divine orchestration of events that led to the downfall of the PDP. When God determines that a people shall fail, their own actions pave the way for their defeat. In the case of the PDP, every misstep by Governor Obaseki was a manifestation of this divine judgment, culminating in their loss and the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo and the APC.
