Obaseki's Disregard for Legislative and Judicial Institutions: A Dark Chapter in Edo's History

The governance of Edo State under Governor Godwin Obaseki marked a period of troubling neglect for the pillars of democracy—most notably, the legislative and judicial arms. It is unprecedented that a state could be ruled without the active participation of a duly constituted House of Assembly. This blatant disregard for the role of elected legislators is a severe breach of democratic principles.

Equally concerning was the governor's failure to inaugurate state judges, leaving the judiciary—a key pillar of justice—paralyzed. The absence of functional courts deprived the people of Edo State of their fundamental rights to legal recourse, allowing unchecked power to thrive. By sidelining these institutions, the administration effectively crippled the checks and balances essential for good governance.

Obaseki's tenure was characterized by a flagrant disregard for the rule of law, with constitutional norms often trampled upon. The legislative arm was not just neglected but systematically dismantled, and the judiciary was left in disrepair. This abuse of constitutional laws and democratic order is a stain on the history of Edo State, one that cannot be easily erased.

The reign of corruption became a norm under his administration, with impunity reigning supreme.
