Knowing When to Step Back: A Call for Constructive Opposition in Edo State

In politics, as in life, knowing when to step back gracefully is a mark of wisdom. Every skilled dancer recognizes the right moment to leave the stage; in much the same way, political actors must know when it’s time to change tactics and adapt. The recent Edo State elections serve as a reminder of this timeless lesson, especially for those who might feel disheartened by the results and, in turn, have chosen a path that only risks further harm to themselves and misleads the very people they claim to represent.

A healthy opposition is vital to democracy. Its role isn’t merely to challenge the government but to provide a robust framework that holds leadership accountable, highlights overlooked issues, and advocates for the people. This honorable mission helps keep the government attentive to the needs and aspirations of the public. However, constructive opposition does not seek to manipulate the public with unfounded grievances or to incite unrest for personal or party advantage.

Unfortunately, some in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) seem to have misinterpreted this responsibility. Rather than engaging as a voice of reason that elevates democratic discourse, some elements have resorted to painting the government with baseless accusations. This approach does not benefit the citizens of Edo State; rather, it diverts energy from meaningful development efforts and fosters disillusionment in the political process.

It’s important to remember that opposition for opposition’s sake achieves little. Instead, true political maturity lies in using one’s position as a platform to highlight genuine needs and shortcomings, enabling constructive change. Edo’s people deserve a productive opposition that places their interests above personal grievances—a political body that builds, rather than tears down.

Let us encourage those who may feel defeated to refocus their efforts toward a higher purpose: becoming a constructive force that will ensure good governance in Edo State. In time, such a dignified stance will earn them not only the respect of the people but also a significant role in shaping the state’s future.
