THE COST OF BETRAYAL: A CALL TO JUSTICE FOR NIGERIA’S GOVERNORS

Recent allegations against former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State paint a troubling picture of how public funds are being weaponized for personal and political ambition. Reports suggest that N100 billion was funneled from Delta State’s coffers to sponsor Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, with an additional N8 billion allegedly used to "purchase" the Vice Presidential slot. The claims also indicate a suspicious transaction of N3 billion to influence the screening committee in favor of Okowa and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

It is deeply disturbing to consider that while Delta State struggled with infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, and economic stagnation, funds meant for the state’s development were allegedly rerouted to private accounts. Even more damning is the claim that Atiku Abubakar’s son was personally involved in transporting the funds in foreign currency—a brazen act of corruption that mocks the accountability Nigerians demand.

Equally concerning is the legacy of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. Under his leadership, Edo State became a haven for empty promises encapsulated in Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). Despite signing dozens of agreements, the state lacks visible development projects to justify the trillions spent. Obaseki’s governance serves as a warning of the dangers of unchecked executive power, with resources squandered while citizens endured poverty and stagnation.

Governors who betray the trust of their people must know that time and justice await them. The era of impunity is over. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and other anti-corruption bodies must prioritize the investigation of these former governors.

Let the stories of Okowa and Obaseki serve as a lesson to those in power today: Nigeria is watching, and the era of reckless spending is coming to an end. Those who fail to repent will not only face judgment in the courts of law but also in the court of public opinion.

It’s time for Nigerians to demand accountability, transparency, and good governance. The reckless actions of corrupt leaders must be confronted, not just for today’s citizens but for the generations yet unborn. Only then can we reclaim our nation from the grip of greed and ensure a brighter, more prosperous future.
