A Historic Convergence: How Governor Monday Okpebholo Positioned Edo as a National Focal Point

In a remarkable demonstration of political leadership and strategic foresight, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, has etched his name into the annals of history by successfully hosting all 23 governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), right here in the Heartbeat of the Nation Edo State.

This was not just another political gathering; it marked the first time in the history of Edo State that a sitting governor has convened his fellow APC governors for a strategic policy meeting of this magnitude. Coming barely eight months into his administration, this feat underscores Governor Monday Okpebholo’s diplomatic reach, visionary leadership, and rapidly growing national influence within the APC.

Beyond the optics of unity and progress, this landmark event carries significant economic and socio-political implications. The influx of governors, their entourages, media teams, and high-level delegates gave a notable boost to the local economy  from hospitality and logistics to small businesses and tourism. Hotels were fully booked for days, transport services engaged, local vendors patronized, and Edo’s rich cultural heritage proudly showcased to a national audience.

But Governor Okpebholo didn’t stop at the policy dialogue. In a profound display of cultural pride and unity, he led all 23 governors to the revered Palace of the Oba of Benin. The governors were elegantly adorned in traditional Edo attire and coral beads, presenting to the nation and the world the richness, dignity, and deep-rooted heritage of the Benin Kingdom. That moment was not merely ceremonial , it was symbolic. It celebrated Edo’s place in Nigeria’s historical tapestry and reminded the country of the power of culture in governance and national cohesion.

This strategic hosting has further elevated Edo State’s positioning in national conversations and policy frameworks. It reaffirms Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to raising the state’s profile and attracting key developmental stakeholders across political and regional lines. The message is clear: Edo is open for business, dialogue, and collaboration.

At a time when Nigeria grapples with economic uncertainty, insecurity, and developmental bottlenecks, leadership that promotes unity, celebrates heritage, and fosters meaningful engagement is not just commendable ,it is essential.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has shown that impactful leadership does not require years in office , it requires vision, intentionality, and courage. Hosting this forum in Edo is a masterstroke in diplomacy, culture, and strategic positioning.

Edo people  and indeed all Nigerians must recognize this moment as a pivotal one. We commend Governor Okpebholo for his bold and visionary leadership and urge him to continue on this path of unity, cultural revival, and economic renewal.
