IN DEMOCRACY, KNOW WHEN YOU ARE DEFEATED AND MOVE ON
In a true democracy, mature democrats know when they are defeated and they move on gracefully. Sadly, the same cannot be said of Nigeria’s opposition parties today.
Except for former President Goodluck Jonathan — who earned global respect for conceding defeat in 2015 — opposition parties in Nigeria have never accepted any electoral loss in good faith. Ironically, these same parties have never rejected the elections they won on the grounds that the process was corrupt.
It completely defies logic to keep the victories INEC gave you and then brand the same INEC corrupt simply because you lost the next one. The height of hypocrisy!
The most shameful part of these fair-weather democrats is their empty boasts about sending President Tinubu back to Lagos using the same INEC they constantly label as corrupt.
Tell the clueless wailers that Nigeria’s stock market has grown by over 200% under Tinubu in just two years — they call it a lie.
Tell them Tinubu has transformed Nigeria’s trade balance from deficit to a surplus of over ₦20 trillion — they call it a lie.
Tell them that non-oil exports have recorded nearly 100% growth under Tinubu — they call it a lie.
Tell them Tinubu has attracted almost $50 billion in investments to Nigeria in two years — they call it a lie.
Meanwhile, it presently costs over ₦2 trillion to mount a successful presidential campaign in Nigeria. Only a fool — like the wailers — would commit such a humongous amount to an election they claim will be rigged by their so-called “corrupt INEC.”
Yet in a few months, these same characters will gather for their infamous “10 million-man march” for Atiku or Obi — even when both cannot muster 7 million votes at the polls.
Only foolish wailers waste time marching under the scorching sun and burning trillions on an election they’ve already declared rigged in advance. These pro-autocratic wailers have already drafted their long list of excuses to discredit INEC after their next defeat in 2027.
In true democracy, we democrats know that you win some, you lose some. But these autocratic wailers believe they must win at all times — and if they lose, the umpire must be corrupt.
Nigeria must move past this cycle of excuses. Democracy thrives on maturity, acceptance of outcomes, and respect for the will of the people — not endless wailing.
