Edo State is experiencing a historic transformation under Governor Monday Okpebholo, as sweeping reforms reshape mobility, restore order, and rebuild public trust across the transport sector. With nearly 100 kilometres of new and ongoing infrastructure projects, modern mass transit renewal, technology-driven operations, and strict safety compliance, Edo’s transportation system is undergoing a complete rebirth.
THE NEW EDO LINE—A SYMBOL OF THE REFORMS
As part of activities marking Governor Okpebholo’s first anniversary, the once-grounded Edo Line has been fully revitalized and reborn as the New Edo Line.
The Managing Director of the Edo State Transport Authority (EDSTA), Hon. Engr. Honghaw Oligbi, in an exclusive interview with the Government House Newsletter, described the transformation as “one of the most far-reaching reforms in the South-South region.”
According to him:
“Governor Okpebholo is rebuilding a modern, efficient, and people-centred transport ecosystem for Edo State.”
He noted that the New Edo Line now operates with:
- Modern buses
- Enhanced management systems
- Technology-based operations
- Strong safety and compliance structures
This places the New Edo Line as one of the most ICT-driven transport companies in the region.
AFFORDABLE FARES BUILT ON WELFARE & SUSTAINABILITY
Oligbi revealed that the New Edo Line has intentionally kept its fares below the industry average.
“The Governor believes welfare is a cardinal pillar of governance. We deliberately subsidise fares so Edo people can enjoy pocket-friendly, reliable and dignified transportation.”
This strategy, he said, has increased patronage and strengthened the long-term growth of the company.
TECHNOLOGY & CLEAN ENERGY DRIVE THE NEW ERA
Governor Okpebholo’s ICT background is directly shaping the transport renaissance. The MD explained that Edo is already transitioning from diesel buses to clean, energy-efficient CNG-powered buses, which will:
- Lower operational costs
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Improve sustainability
- Align Edo with global transport standards
“Edo’s transport future will be digital, green and efficient,” Oligbi affirmed.
250KM OF ROADS & HISTORIC FLYOVERS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Oligbi highlighted that over 250 kilometres of road construction are currently ongoing across Edo State.
For the first time in the state's history, flyovers are under construction within a governor’s first year in office.
These projects will:
- Decongest major corridors
- Reduce travel time
- Boost logistics and commerce
- Improve safety for commuters and operators
SAFETY, ORDER & THE FIGHT AGAINST ILLEGALITY
Security remains a major cornerstone of the reform agenda. The transport authority has intensified:
- Driver trainings
- Compliance drills
- Passenger safety protocols
Oligbi commended Governor Okpebholo for decisively removing illegal revenue collectors, restoring:
- Discipline
- Order
- Public confidence across the sector

Reflecting on the administration’s achievements so far, Oligbi noted:
