𝙃𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙮, 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 (𝙐𝘽𝙏𝙃)

On Thursday, 11th December 2025, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital welcomed surgeons, researchers, innovators, and thought leaders from across the country for three days of knowledge-driven engagements. 

The 86th Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society brings together leading experts to share insights, strengthen capacity, and advance the future of surgical care in Nigeria.

The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, opened the ceremony with a warm welcome to all delegates and partners. She described the conference as a vital platform for advancing surgical science and professional collaboration.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Building Capacity for Minimal Access Surgery: Research, Innovation, and System Readiness”, the CMD noted that minimal access surgery reflects a global shift toward safer procedures, faster recovery, and improved patient outcomes. 

She emphasized that these priorities align with UBTH’s commitment to clinical excellence and the institution’s broader agenda of expanding advanced, technology-driven care.

She highlighted UBTH’s sustained investments in specialized training, continuous professional development, and infrastructure upgrades designed to support modern surgical techniques. She further pointed out that, true system readiness requires both skilled personnel and the right environment, an area UBTH continues to strengthen through ongoing revitalization of operating theatres, emergency spaces, and digital systems.

Addressing the sub-theme, “Artificial Intelligence in Surgical Research and Practice,” she noted that UBTH’s smart-hospital transformation positions the institution to harness AI for better diagnostics, workflow optimisation, and precision-guided surgical planning. 

She also announced UBTH’s selection by the Federal Government as one of eight proposed centres for the Virtual Reality AI Simulation Centre, following successful assessment and site approval.

Professor Ize-Iyamu commended the Nigerian Surgical Research Society and the Local Organising Committee, led by Professor Stanley Okugbo, for sustaining this important platform for scientific exchange and collaboration.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee expressed appreciation to the NSRS for the privilege of hosting this year’s conference, underscoring the relevance of the theme and the need for continuous skill acquisition and innovation to improve surgical outcomes nationwide.
